Like all who work the land, Allen C. Harris, founder of Chapman H LLC and CEO of Bailey-Harris Construction, is well aware that for tens of thousands of years, many have lived on the site that is now The Springs of Mill Lakes. Harris, developer of the master-planned community for 55+ active adults, has a deep love of history, so he was delighted when one of his employees gave him a number of spear points and arrowheads (known collectively as projectile points), and other artifacts of the past. Harris painstakingly researched each point and compiled them into a beautiful display which now hangs in the community’s clubhouse. The points reach back across time to the Paleo period (13,500 11,000 BC), Early, Middle and Late Archaic (8,000– 1,000 BC), Early, Middle and Late Woodland (1,000 BC – 1,000 AD), Mississippian (8001600 AD) and more.
In addition to a shadowbox showcasing the relics, the display includes interpretive information for visitors to enjoy, with more detailed background available by request. “When I hold one of these points in my hand – knowing it was once held by someone else thousands of years ago right here in this very same place – I am reminded that it is a privilege to preserve and honor the history of our community,” said Harris.
